Woman Zone celebrates their 10-year anniversary

Women in Soil – Changing Lives book launch is part of Woman Zone’s celebration of their 10-year anniversary and their association with Artscape and their Women’s Humanity Arts festival (AWHAF).

Woman Zone (WZ), an NPO designed to promote and unite the women of Cape Town, has had a long association with Artscape and their Women’s Humanity Arts festival (AWHAF), now in its 16th year. Traditionally their role has been to organise a number of events, notably the Women’s Humanity Walk – a key feature that culminates at the Artscape piazza. The walk has been on hold since lockdown.

With COVID restrictions now lifted the organisers are fully aware of the tremendous challenges created by the pandemic. Artscape aims to provide a ‘A Space of Healing’ over this Women’s Month.

  • With this in mind the Circle of Care came about and Woman Zone is proud to be associated with this concept which will take place on Women’s Day (August 9) on the Artscape Piazza from 11h30. All Capetonians, women – men and young people – are invited to stand together in a circle of solidarity to observe a moment of silence for those who have lost family and friends during the pandemic and those who have been victims of gender based violence.
  • An interfaith blessing will precede the event and poets will open the proceedings.
  • Central will be the symbolic planting of a spekboom tree as well as guided breathing and, at the suggestion of CEO Marlene le Roux, a programme of shared singing.
  • There will also be a commemorative banner on which participants will be invited to write the names of loved ones lost.

Women in Soil – Changing Lives book launch

Woman Zone is marking their 10th year and their association with Artscape’s Women’s Humanity Arts festival (AWHAF) by producing Women in Soil in partnership with NPO Soil for Life who this year turns 20.

The book, Women in Soil – changing lives primarily features the stories of 10 women home food gardeners. It will be launched at the Festival on August 8 and the women themselves will be in attendance. Books will be on sale during the festival. Soil for Life will be supplying 100 miniature spekboom plants which will be distributed at the Circle of Care on August 9th.

With the ever-increasing cost of putting good food on the table, growing your own vegetables has never been more important – nor more essential.
This, and a number of other factors, were the catalyst for this 76 page book which, apart from being both inspirational and practical, it also celebrates the 10th and 20th anniversaries respectively of two women-founded NPOs: WOMAN ZONE and SOIL FOR LIFE.

It contains:
• The stories of 10 of SFL’s women home food gardeners with tips and recipes
• Practical info on organic vegetable gardening in small spaces
• Inspirational info on what both SFL and WZ are, and what they do
• It’s also a tribute to founder of Soil for Life, the late Pat Featherstone and her vision for: Healthy soil = Healthy food = Healthy people
• The book will retail for R150 and will be on sale through both Soil for Life and Woman Zone.

The private launch will be held at Artscape on August 8 at 10h30.
Phillippa Kabali Kagwa will open proceedings with a poem and Marlene le Roux will introduce guest speaker HRH Princess Celenhle Dlamini, Chairperson of the National Arts Council. Each of the 10 women featured will receive a copy of the book amongst other small gifts.
