Meet Karen Kallmann on the Sanlam Arts Round Up

Women of Action – A History of the Union of Jewish Women at the South African Jewish Museum is about a remarkable institution and a mainstay of South African Jewish life.

Believe it or not, the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) has been around for over 90 years, and in that time has been responsible for an enormous contribution to the betterment of the broader community locally and beyond South Africa.

Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm every Friday at 17h30

Women of Action grew out of a brilliantly researched book on the Union’s history, authored by Karen Kallmann the current

Cape Chair of the UJW, who tells us of this development in the Sanlam Arts Round Up.Women of Action, Union of Jewish Women,

Karen explains that she was initially approached to write a book about Toni Saphra, the founder of the organisation. Based on her research, she motivated for the book to also include a history of the UJW, so that it would cover Toni Saphra’s life and her legacy.

What impresses and amazes is the extent of the outreach achieved throughout the country and beyond.

A visit to Women of Action at the South African Jewish Museum is definitely a call to action!
