Cape Town is once again proud to host the Lion of Africa Cape Town Open at South Africa’s oldest golf club, the Royal Cape Golf Club, from 31 October to 3 November 2013.

The inaugural tournament was played last year, bringing big-time professional golf back to the Mother City after an absence of over a decade.

This year’s event is expected to be bigger and better. The Lion of Africa Insurance Company is the title sponsor of the four-round tournament, which will feature a full field of 156 of the Sunshine Tour’s leading professionals. The winner’s share of the prize find is an impressive R317 000.

“The City of Cape Town is delighted to have this world-class tournament back in Cape Town. Our goal is to position the City as the leading golf tourism destination in Africa. We have already started thinking of ways to attract golf tourists and will soon be developing a golf marketing strategy,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Councillor Grant Pascoe.

In 2011, South Africa was named Africa, Indian Ocean and Gulf States Golf Destination of the Year by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators. Cape Town boasts some of the country’s top golf courses with in excess of 10 golf clubs within a 20-minute drive of the CBD.

The Lion of Africa Cape Town Open joins a list of great annual sporting events such as the Two Oceans Marathon and the Pick n Pay Cape Argus Cycle Tour, which have become permanent features on the city’s events calendar.

“All of these events epitomise the City’s goal to establish Cape Town as the events capital of the continent. They attract top sports people and bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds to our city,” said Councillor Pascoe.

Tickets for the Lion of Africa Cape Town Open cost R10 each and will be available at the gate. For more information please visit
