A feast of Yiddish song from the Old World served by the new with singer Caely-Jo Levy as the Master Chef!
As part of celebrating 175 years of SA Jewry, Caely-Jo Levy with musicians Robin Cohen, Adi Lazar, Dino Ben Tovim and Kieran Crowe, will be tracing their roots through Yiddish song.
“In 2009 I was invited to sing in the Yiddish Song Festival”, relates Cealy-Joe. “It was there that my journey began. I felt a deep connection not only to the beautiful and sometimes haunting melodies but also to the lyrics of the songs. These words described my heritage, my religion, my history, my culture and suddenly I felt more connected to my Yiddishkiet and my identity than ever before, a gift that is hard to come by in this modern world.
I feel it is now my responsibility to honour and conserve these songs and the deep history, lessons and culture that comes with them. This is my heritage and these are the songs of my ancestors. I get filled with excitement to be able to perform them and share them with my generation and those that feel as deeply connected to them as I do, so that they are not lost and so that we are reminded of our past.
I had the privilege of bringing The Old World into The New world performing at the Voorkamer Fest in Darling in 2015. I was accompanied by the super talented Robin Cohen on keys and it was a humbling and moving experience.
It is a huge honour to be a part of the celebrations of 175 years in South Africa.”
