Zanele Muholi uncovered is what Lindsey Raymond, Gallery Manager at Southern Guild, does as she takes us through this artists self-titled, autobiographical exhibition.

Lindsay gives the background to the new partnership between Zanele Muholi and Southern Guild, who are looking to expanding into sculpture. Zanele has acquired a significant status as a photographer despite the inherent challenges based on gender, race and sexual preference. This exhibition was seen as a way to ‘monumentalise’ her photography.
The work might be viewed as confrontational as we are looking at a new vision where nothing is private. The artist is focused on the internal rather than the external. We are seeing how the fragility of the body reflects on our well being. In fact this is a bold shift in how we view ourselves.
The scale is impressive and the work is bold – a powerful statement in contrast to the fragility of the issues confronting the artist.
The opening of the exhibition was mobbed with between 350 to 400 people attending. This incredible fanfare was repeated at the opening of Zanele Muholi’s exhibition in Switzerland. The response has been incredible and the exhibition has been extended to 17 August.
The work needs to be seen to fully appreciate the scale and the content – the juxtaposition of sculpture and photography plays an important role in capturing the artist’s incredible vision and personal landscape.
