Happening at Zeitz MOCAA and Investec Cape Town Art Fair

The Zeitz MOCAA line-up for the Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2023 includes a new exhibition, spotlights an exciting initiative at the Art Fair and invites you to enjoy performances presented by their Atelier artist-in-residence Igshaan Adams in collaboration with Garage Dance Ensemble.

On Friday, 17 February, Zeitz MOCAA will unveil GILT, a new solo exhibition by Nigerian-born, British artist Mary Evans that brings the artist’s decades-long practice of using life-sized silhouettes to the galleries of Zeitz MOCAA. The exhibition presents new work commissioned by the museum that is a site-specific response informed by a period of research and exploration of Cape Town. The title of the exhibition is a play on the words ‘gilt’ and ‘guilt’, with the former referring to something that resembles gold laid on a surface while the latter suggests the feeling of inadequacy and what may be a consequence of surviving historical wounds experienced by Black people.

Also taking place on Friday, 17 February, as well as on Saturday, 18 February, is a specially commissioned performance by

Zeitz MOCAA Atelier Residency, Igshaan Adams

Igshaan Adams

Garage Dance Ensemble, presented by Zeitz MOCAA Atelier artist-in-residence Igshaan Adams. The performance responds to and interacts with Adams’ suspended dust-cloud sculptural installations on level 2 of the museum with Friday’s performance taking place in the gallery space and Saturday’s performance beneath the track shed at the entrance to the museum.

Throughout the weekend of 17 to 19 February, visit the Zeitz MOCAA booth (booth number I2) at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair (ICTAF) 2023. The incredible team from the Centre for Art Education (CFAE), in collaboration with community architect, researcher and social innovator in sustainable development Kevin Kimwelle, will be launching the Zeitz MOCAA Mobile Museum (ZMmm) project. The Mobile Museum initiative endeavours to further the development of programmes beyond the physical confines of the museum building to bring art and art-making to underserved communities, and the installation invites viewers to contribute to the co-creation of the project.
