The AVA Gallery in partnership with Spier opens of three solo exhibitions featuring Nicholas Esterhuizen, Jo Voysey and Donovan Ward.
THE FACE OF CAPE TOWN – Nicholas EsterhuizenÂ
Nicholas Esterhuizen employs the main gallery with an exhibition titled The Face of Cape Town. Esterhuizen has spent the last year crafting over 30 portraits searching for the identity of Cape Town through its inhabitants. The paintings speak of the dialogue between the artist, the sitter and the many faces of Cape Town.
REMEDY – Jo VoyseyÂ
In Remedy Jo Voysey focuses on the expressive potential of medicinal remedies as a medium for painting. Medicine functions analogically with loss and healing. Voysey’s exploration is concentrated on aspects of human relationships with animals.
BRUTALISED BARBIE – Donovan Ward
The image of Barbie that endures is of a white, all American, and blue eyed blonde. Barbie and her adornments register the lifestyle and values of the privileged consumer and capitalism. The reality of most of the world’s children is not reflected in Barbie’s world. In Brutalised Barbie a series of sculptures, Donovan Ward draws attention to some of their realities, abject poverty, war and violence.
