Dancers Love Dogs (DLD) takes place on Saturday 20 June at the Artscape Opera House, featuring dancers and artists volunteering their time and talent to raise funds for animal sterilisation in the Western Cape.
People often read about how one random act of kindness can change lives. Brigitte Reeve-Taylor, who presents DLD, not only performed such an act, but went on to bring together hundreds of dancers over the last few years in Dancers Love Dogs, to create an annual show in Cape Town and Johannesburg that raises funds to sterilise animals.
Since 2012, this not-for-profit organisation has raised over one million Rand and sterilised approximately 6500 animals.
The journey began when Reeve-Taylor rescued a puppy from alongside a busy highway and discovered, on her journey to find help for the animal, the miserable existence that homeless animals endure on the streets of Cape Town and its surrounding communities. Sterilisations, over time, make an enormous difference in reducing the numbers of strays and unwanted dogs in our society. The money raised by DLD also financially assists owners who want to sterilise their pets but find the cost too high.
The entertainment for DLD 2015 is exciting and includes artists from dance companies, schools and groups across the country as well as other well known South African performers. The show will be MC’d by Brendan van Rhyn, who formerly starred in The Rocky Horror Show and who, as Cathy Specific, will also MC the new upcoming Madame Zingara production, The Celebration.
The line up this year includes: Cape town City Ballet, Cape Junior Ballet, Zama, Vadhini Indian Arts Academy, Ashley & Bradley Searle, the EOAN Group, Clive Allardyce from Mince and Ananada Fuchs, amongst many others. There will also be a special appearance by the SA Guide Dogs Association, and Bob the delightful “Frenchie” from SABC3’s Expresso Show.
