Free Birthday Entry & Free Online Programming

April is Freedom Mont at Zeitz MOCAA!  If April is your birthday month, then you get free entry on your birthday (or any day during your birthday month).  And the creative online programming allows free access to the arts!

A wise man once said, “For to be free is not to merely cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” That man was the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, who led South Africa into a new era of democracy and freedom.

Now, despite the COVID-19 lockdown regulations, South Africans are once again commemorating the nation’s first democratic post-apartheid elections and its citizens right to freedom of movement and speech.

Zeitz MOCAA’s April line-up of free programming that allows for all citizens to have access to the arts is a testament to the struggles of Mandela and his comrades.

“While the new opening hours – Thursday through Sunday – can no longer accommodate Africa Wednesdays, we are pleased that we are still able to provide free access of another kind: free entry to the museum on your birthday (or any day during your birthday month) with the presentation of a valid South African ID or African passport” is the good news from Zeitz MOCAA.

Freedom Month at Zeitz MOCAA Online

Freedom Month at ZeitzSince mid-March, Zeitz MOCAA has been able to welcome up to 100 visitors at any one time to the museum. And while there’s still plenty to see in the galleries, Zeitz MOCAA also offer in-person and online programming where you can take a deep-dive into the themes prevalent in current exhibitions.

Head to Head – Co-Creation + Action x Mobility = Disruption

The monthly Head to Head series on Instagram Live is another opportunity to be part of relevant conversations with the movers and shakers of the art ecosystem.

This month’s one-hour session on Tuesday, 13 April sees participatory researcher, artist and facilitator Nabeel Petersen and Liesl Hartman, Zeitz MOCAA’s Head of Education, in conversation about positive disruption. The title: Co-Creation + Action x Mobility = Disruption.

Critical Discourse

Led by Zeitz MOCAA’s Curatorial team, the Critical Discourse programming for April is related to the current Alfredo Jaar: The Rwanda Project exhibition and the annual International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

Join Zeitz MOCAA on Thursday, 29 April for an online roundtable discussion focused on the relationship between trauma and aesthetics, and processes of healing.

Children’s Workshops

Learning through play is an integral part of a child’s development – and art provides a fun, easily accessible platform for this. Zeitz MOCAA’s Centre for Art Education (CFAE), situated on the lower ground floor of the museum, is a child-friendly space that offers an array of creative workshops for the entire family to take part in.

From Tuesday, 20 April through Sunday, 2 May, children can engage in the creative possibilities of easel painting and drawing. The CFAE space will be transformed into a traditional studio with activities incorporating the use of the portable easel.

Themes that will be explored include flowers, foliage and flora; a still life of sweets; reproduction of famous artworks; and decorating a clock to help children learn about time.

Your safety remains our priority – Message from Zeitz MOCAA

While we remain open to the public throughout the current COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve put some additional processes in place to ensure your health and safety.

On arrival, your temperature will be taken and you will be asked to sanitise regularly at the sanitisation stations throughout the museum.

Additionally, only 100 people are allowed in the museum at any one time – which means it’ll feel like you have the space to yourself!

Our audio guides are now also available on Soundcloud so you won’t need to share a device with anyone else, and we’ve also made it easier to pay for admission and other purchases with contactless payment options.

Don’t forget: We have a strict ‘No mask, no entry’ policy
