Hennie Meyer explains that ‘Vaas Kolonie’ at the MOK Gallery is an exhibition based on his response to the interior of the building, Ansella’s house, on the Muratie wine estate built in 1685 and now housing the gallery.
The installation of vases is a nostalgic yet contemporary interpretation of 17th century ceramics from the East brought to The Cape Colony by the Dutch. Each vase represents one year of the 336 years of the building’s existence.
“Through glaze experimentation and the ceramic process I use the vase as a vehicle for self expression and exploration” observes Hennie Meyer.
“Clay is a passion and obsession. It is my preferred means of communication.
Observing a group of jugs in my studio sparked my first large scale installations in 2008. An invitation to make a number of extensive ceramic works for Qunci Villas, a boutique hotel in Lombok, In-donesia took these ideas further.” The concept of repetition and variation are central to the successful Ukusela eKapa project that formed part of Cape Town as the 2014 World Design Capital.”
Hennie studied ceramics in Australia and South Africa. He exhibits extensively, both locally and overseas. His work has been included in numerous International and South African public and private collections. His work is covered in several international publications.
