Sensational Gloria Bosman, born in Soweto, ,is one of the main attraction at the Jazz in the Native Yards (JINY) winter series to perform to perform this Sunday 20 June at KwaSec Ny 138, no. 52, Gugulethu from 3pm.
“I am very excited to be performing in Gugulethu”, says Bosman. “I guess it’s a good sign to have an opportunity to have the same music promoters repeatedly book you”.
Back by popular demand since her infectious performance in Langa, Bosman is back in Cape Town almost three years later on JINY home ground. Gloria Bosman in concert is a rare weekend treat!
“Such spaces are needed because we always enjoy the intimacy they provide and they are created for people who really love jazz; they make a brilliant audience,” says Bosman.
Supported by the Cape Town Music Academy (CTMA), a non-profit organisation that continuously create opportunities for musicians to perform, the winter jazz series is host to upcoming and established musicians including internationally acclaimed saxophonist Salim Washington and celebrated pianist Afrika Mkhize.
“The Cape Town Music Academy seeks to provide performance opportunities for local artists. Through our partnership with Jazz in the Native Yards we have brought the joy and unifying powers of music to a wide range of communities in and around Cape Town over the past five years. Don’t miss out on our June 2021 concert series,” says Nico McLachan, Director of the CTMA.
Cape Town seems to be where Gloria Bosman’s heart is for now.
“I have always loved Cape Town and think it’s a brilliant place to retire. I got to have a taste of most of it, so don’t think I am deluded, going only with the tourist impressions of the place. I am studying at the University of Cape Town. There is always an opportunity to learn more.”
With her ever-growing list of honours, including two SA Music Awards (SAMA’s) and more than eleven nominations as well as two KORA nominations, Bosman is one of the country’s most celebrated singers.
She has an impressive biography. She has performed with the cream of the crop both nationally and internationally. Her repertoire includes at least two Afrikaans songs. She has performed alongside Afrikaans artists and enjoys exploring.
All her past albums have been great successes. Her debut album Tranquillity earned her the prestigious award for Best Newcomer as well as received nominations for Best Contemporary Jazz Album and Best Female Artist at the 2001 SAMAs.
Her follow-up album, The Many Faces of Gloria Bosman, featured collaborations with finest musicians in the country.
Bosman’s talent has pushed her to surpass boundaries and gain followers from across the country. She has performed on SA’s top stages and national festivals, including regular performances at major Afrikaans music festivals, like KKNK, Aardklop and Skouspel in Sun City.
On Sunday, she will offer her audience with new and old jazz compositions.
“If one doesn’t take people down memory lane, then you have failed them. I have recorded so much music over the years, I will also be pulling some of the music people haven’t heard from the existing repertoire,” she says.
This time around will feature a band of young musicians; Ludwe Danxa (keyboards), Nathan Carolous (guitar), Qhubekani Mthethwa (bass) and Sinikiwe Mabaso (drums)
“I enjoy the younger musicians. They carry a beautiful youthful energy and are not afraid to try out new things. I am a sucker for brilliance. They are all of that and more,”
