Horizon – Selections from the Sanlam Art Collection
2 July – 27 September 2022
Norval Foundation presents Horizon, a group exhibition showing a century of landscape art selected from the Sanlam Art Collection at the Manor House on the Boschendal Wine Estate, Franschhoek.

Horizon, Sanlam Art Collection

The exhibition will include over 30 works, dating back to the early 20th Century through to recent work by contemporary artists, including significant works by the likes of Maggie Laubser, Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef, David Goldblatt and Nita Spilhaus. Landscape, as a theme, is dense with tension, memory, and knowledge. Landscape, as a physical space has unavoidable political and economic stresses but also many possibilities, entangled in a history that continues to be debated. Many debates around land, the landscape, and our ties to it have been present in artistic discourse for many years, particularly in the South African context.
This exhibition explores the genre of landscape art through different mediums, resulting in work as diverse and varied as the natural biomes seen across South Africa. In this selection of works from the Sanlam Art Collection, themes, tension, hesitation, and experimentation are foregrounded. Horizon puzzles the duality of interactions that have occurred across different landscapes by different people.
Groupings of works are presented as an exploration of formal artistic qualities such as line, colour and material, but also as a prompt to grapple with confronting questions of access, interaction, and presence. Displayed along an horizon line, the conceptual premise of this exhibition centers the question of land, reflecting on historical imagery while wondering what may be on the horizon to come. The works offer an exploration of displacement, returning, familiarity, absence, and presence. Key works looking at South
Africa’s landscape and the region surrounding the Boschendal Estate include Pieke, Jonkershoek by Nita Spilhaus, Ashley Walter’s 3 Lantana, Uitsig, and Plantations near Cape Town by Durant Sihlali.
Horizon is presented within the recently restored Manor House at Boschendal Wine Estate, creating a dynamic dialogue with the history of the building and the artworks. A diverse public programme will accompany the exhibition, taking place online, throughout the gallery, and into the surrounding outdoors of the Werf and Manor House grounds.

VESSEL – Group exhibition celebrating local ceramic artists
2 July 2022 – 15 August 2022
VESSEL  in the Manor House Gallery at Boschendal Wine Estate is a groupexhibition celebrating local ceramic artists and their recent practice.

This exhibition will showcase the work of Cape Town based ceramic artists Alistair Blair, Jade Paton and Ben Orkin alongside selected works from Art Gazee and artisanal flower arrangements by Mr. Munro.
This is the first commercial exhibition at Boschendal Gallery to exhibit a group of artists practicing in contemporary ceramics. Many pieces are unique to this exhibition and demonstrate the range of each artist’s practice and create an inviting point of engagement for design lovers. The exhibition grapples with ideas of materiality and duality within this medium – exploring concepts of utility and decoration, fragility and durability, maker and material.

These exhibitions both contemplate ideas of humanity’s relationship to land and nature, which is similarly celebrated in the Boschendal Gallery Shop, featuring a range of hand selected local products for purchase.
