The Art Collection of Huberte Rupert & Book Launch at the Rupert Museum is a celebration of Huberte Rupert’s lifelong relationship with South African artists and collecting.
The Art Collection and Book Launch was opened by Hanneli Rupert and Johan Rupert – son of Huberte Rupert and father of Hanneli, together with Roelof Van Wyk who recently completed the architectural transformation of the Rupert Art Museum. Hanelli focused on her hands on involvement at the museum and her wish to make the space more open and welcoming – the transformation being an essential element. She also wanted to pay tribute to her grandmother who had the vision to create this impressive collection. Johan Rupert focused both on her vision and her selective eye that resulted in a collection he was determined to preserve.
The exhibition and book provide an opportunity to recognise her foresight.
Launch of The Art Collection of Huberte Rupert – South African Art of the 20th Century
The exhibition and the full-colour publication by Amanda Botha celebrates Huberte Rupert’s art collection. Art critic and writer Amanda Botha traces Huberte’s art appreciation journey through her involvement as a student cultivating friendships with local artists such as her ‘Big Five’: Cecil Higgs, Maggie Laubser, Irma Stern, Jean Welz and Anton van Wouw. The book features works from modern and contemporary South African artists, including works by Penny Siopis, Stanley Pinker, William Kentridge, and Wille Bester acquired from the Cape Town Triennials (1982–1991).
The book has a selection of 100 artworks from the collection, which includes works by both modern and contemporary South African artists.
