The section of the existing cycle lane in Bree Street between Strand Street and Waterkant was colourised green on 15 December 2012 as a test phase.
The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater, Councillor Brett Herron, said: “The City is committed to the promotion of safe cycling and the use of non-motorised transport. This includes providing a safe area for cyclists to be able to share the road with motorists. While the colourisation of cycle lanes is being undertaken internationally in major cities, this is being done for the first time in South Africa with Cape Town leading the way.”
“The colourisation of these lanes is in response to complaints I received from cyclists, saying that the lanes were not effective because motorists drive or parked in them. This is therefore an attempt to improve the lanes’ visibility and thus their efficacy. I also call on all motorists to share the road and respect the lanes,” Cllr Herron added.
Currently the implementation of a dedicated cycle lane along Albert Road through Woodstock and Salt River is being investigated with proposals which includes the colourisation thereof as well. The test phase in Bree Street will provide feedback on a number of important matters such as the colour to be used for:
• optimal contrast with the asphalt surface of the adjacent road
• skid resistance
• resistance to tyre markings from vehicles turning and parking movements
• fading
• impact to demarcate the cycle lane and prevent parking
The product used for the colourisation has been used internationally in urban areas with high traffic volumes and movements. One of the benefits of the product is that it is sprayed in several layers rather than painted.
