Fragmented Realities: An Algorithmic Lens by Kathy Robins
Fragmented Realities seeks to spark dialogue about the influence of algorithm on our perceptions and beliefs. The interconnection between humans, plants, and animals informs Robins’ work. Her use of mixed media explores the conditions that embrace complexity, as well as the conditions that restrict it. The artist employs an alchemical process to activate copper, triggering unpredictable reactions. Other materials, including cyanotype, oil paint, brass, glass, and paper, contribute to a diverse and layered dialogue within her practise.

Umngqwambo conjures the remnants of initiation rituals and pedagogies that once framed the cycles of life in pre-colonial societies. The term in isiZulu can refer to communal gatherings or ceremonies that mark transformative life transitions such as coming of age, marriage, or spiritual calling. These rites of passage, now largely displaced by the machinery of colonial modernity, are revisited in this exhibition as sites of tension, memory, and possibility. Through oil painting, installation, and video, the exhibition traverses the thresholds between tradition and transformation, self and collective, body and spirit, all while interrogating the visceral experience of time, movement, and transition.
Main Gallery & Mezzanine: The Promise | Lionel Mbayiwa, Kenneth Shandu, Madeleine van Manen and Rentia Retief Curated by Nkosinathi Quwe
The Promise is the title of this year’s Nando’s Creative Exchange (NCX) exhibition, which continues at the AVA this January.
The artists explore the universal human desire for a secure sense of belonging within their environments, seeking meaning through symbolism and distilled imagery.
NCX is Nando’s flagship artist development programme in partnership with Spier Arts Trust – aimed at helping artists to take the next steps in their professional practice – offering a group exhibition and mentorship opportunities, including art materials sponsorship and a significant platform for exposure.
