The Market Theatre’s, The Cry Of Winnie Mandela (29 Jan – 15 Feb), a powerful theatrical journey which was highly praised and sold out in Johannesburg, comes to The Baxter this January. Adapted by Alex Burger from Njabulo S. Ndebele’s celebrated novel, it is directed by award-winning MoMo Matsunyane. The production weaves together the stories of four South African women facing uncertainty and loss, tying their experiences to the life and legacy of Winnie Mandela. Through heartfelt storytelling, humour and rich emotion, the play explores the universal theme of waiting and the resilience that emerges from it. It is a tribute to the strength of the human spirit and a story that resonates with our reflections on the past and the present. Get the R200 Early Bird Special for the first 4 performances, 29 Jan – 01 Feb using promo code “Winnie25” at checkout. [BOOK HERE]
As we contemplate the meaning of it all, join comedian, Riaad Moosa, for a laughter-filled performance of his latest show, What’s the Point? (07 – 18 Jan) This doctor-turned-comic gently pokes at our most profound questions about life’s purpose. It’s a witty, slightly philosophical, and entirely entertaining way to start the year with a smile. [BOOK HERE]
The Baxter is thrilled to highlight the UCT Summer School (20 Jan – 08 Feb) where celebrated artist William Kentridge will discuss his chamber opera, The Great Yes, The Great No, and the related film, One More Sea to Cross (28 Jan). This profound work reimagines the historical voyage of the Capitaine Paul-Lemerle in 1941, as it transported a host of intellectuals and artists fleeing Vichy France to Martinique – André Breton, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Wifredo Lam, Victor Serge and Anna Seghers among them. Part play, part Greek choir, part chamber opera, and all infused with Kentridge’s surrealist visuals, it promises a mesmerising reflection on history, exile, and creativity. [BOOK HERE]
Shortly after, from 26 February to 22 March, Faustus in Africa! comes to The Baxter. Faustus in Africa! is a collaboration between William Kentridge and Handspring Puppet Company and a re-working of their multi-award-winning 1995 production of the same name. The production brings together a remarkable creative team and cast, which includes Atandwa Kani, Jennifer Steyn and Wessel Pretorius, with Lara Foot as Associate Director. Faustus goes on a safari, eager to experience the wonders Africa holds. But what begins as a thrilling journey soon descends into a spiral of greed and desire, as Faustus trades moral conviction for fleeting gratification. At its heart, this story asks: how far will we go to indulge our passions, and what are we willing to risk for momentary rewards? Tickets are selling fast so be sure to get yours! [BOOK HERE]
