Nine students graduated from BREADrev’s first mobile bakery school.
In true African style, the graduation ceremony for BREADrev’s first mobile bakery school, was a feast of singing, dancing, words of praise and great bread.
Baking beautiful bread, and applying the basic business skills, the graduating students are keen to get their BREADshops up and earning. Three BREADshops will open from the three groups that participated in the bakery school, two in Nkanini and one in Langa. Nkanini 1, very ably lead by Yandi, is already selling over 50 loaves per day, as well as taking orders for parties and baking the bread for the Orange IQ’s Nutrition Kitchen’s requirements.
Many of these people have very little education and have not earned in many a year, aside from a meager child government grant. The group have set shifts and the first group is up at 01:00 to get the dough ready for early morning commuters at 06:00.
This has been achieved by collaboration and fabulous partnerships. With special thanks to A Reaching Hand, who took the risk; UNISA, ARH’s learning partner, Pollsmoor Prison for awesome ovens and everyone else that has shown up at the perfect time.
