Eben - Breathing Underwater at Art@Africa

Breathing Underwater is the title of the solo exhibition by Eben, of brilliantly executed drawings, that appear to be photographs, that are on show at Art@Africa at the Clocktower Centre at the V&A Waterfront..

Listen to the Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30

Breathing UnderwaterEben explains that he wants to inform us about the Siamese fighter fish that is able to breathe in and out of water. He focuses on how we, as people, demolish and hurt our eco-system through pollute our waters, not knowing what we are doing and its implications for future generations. The person in his drawing, embodying the fish, is captured in this surreal world, a space in which she is lost and trying to adapt to this environment . Striving to break free and make a difference and make things better for the future. The balance between mankind and nature runs through the work.

“This is NOT a photo” that appears below his work – Eben explains the way he works to achieve this effect. It comes as a surprise that his medium is simply charcoal and paper. He tells about the ‘crazy’ invitation he received from Paris to enter a photographic exhibition. He had to advise that his work was in fact drawings!  An eraser is an essential tool in these incredibly detailed works that can take up to 450 hours to complete.

The obsessive attention to detail and the impeccable artistry of Eben’s Breathing Underwater will leave you BREAHLESS! A case of seeing is believing.
