The City of Cape Town will host an international friendly between Bafana Bafana and Angola at the Cape Town Stadium on Youth Day, 16 June 2015.

The City supports this international match, which provides an opportunity to give xenophobia the red card.

‘International soccer games bring South Africans from all walks of life together. Soccer is a unifying sport and we are calling on residents to come out in their numbers and support our home team. These games draw fans and media from across the continent, placing the Mother City in the pan-African spotlight, which in turn boosts tourism and the local economy,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Councillor Garreth Bloor.

The City was approached by the South African Football Association (SAFA) in May to host the event at the Cape Town Stadium. In return for hosting the match, SAFA has provided the City with the rights package which allows the City to leverage its association with the event in terms of media exposure.

‘We are honoured to host this match at our world-class stadium on Youth Day. Our support for the event is part of our strategy to position Cape Town as the events capital of Africa. Events play a pivotal role in generating visitor expenditure and growing our local economy. Our success in hosting events of various sizes and types, throughout the year and throughout various parts of the city, has earned Cape Town an enviable reputation as an events destination.

‘In light of the recent spate of xenophobic violence, the City will also use the event to reaffirm our stance against xenophobia. As hosts, we welcome the Angolan team together with their many supporters to our city, and we call on all Capetonians to take a collective stand against xenophobia,’ said Councillor Bloor.

The South African Football Association is delighted to return to the Mother City.

‘It is always great to play our matches in Cape Town where we have previously enjoyed massive support, and we are confident that this time around it will be no different. We urge the fans of the beautiful game, in particular the fans of Bafana Bafana, to rally behind the team.

‘Matches against Angola are always hard fought and competitive and this friendly encounter, which is part of preparations for the CHAN tournament for our Senior Men’s National Team, will be no exception,’ said SAFA CEO, Dennis Mumble.
