Celebrate creative women this month at Kuier@TheCastle on 31 August. In honour of Women’s Month, a special edition of Kuier@TheCastle – Cape Town CBD’s biggest monthly family-friendly creative and lifestyle event – will showcase the talents of dozens of local female designers and craft artisans, highlighting the extraordinary contribution made by women to our creative economy.

AND the Walkabout of the William Fehr Collection, by Curator Esther Esmyol, will take place at 12 noon this Saturday at Kuier@TheCastle. The walkabout was scheduled for last month and cancelled when Kuier@TheCastle was cancelled on account of the weather. The walkabout will have a ‘celebrate creative women’ angle, and the contribution of Lady Anne Barnard will be a feature. Meet at the stair way to the Right of the Kat Balcony to join the walkabout through the elegant ambience of these stately rooms of the Castle. Hosted by the Craft + Design Institute (CDI) in collaboration with the Castle of Good Hope, Kuier@TheCastle has become a must-visit event for locals and visitors in Cape Town. The Kuier@TheCastle event is ideal for the entire family, combining the discovery of exquisite local artisanal products and creative workshops with delectable local foods and live music performances. Additionally, all visitors will enjoy access to all the Castle’s museums throughout the day.
“This Women’s Month, lets celebrate our nation’s wonderful creative women – we invite everyone to come meet phenomenal female designers and artisans, discover their beautiful products and show their support for local,” says Fran Stewart, Market Development Programme Manager at the CDI. She adds that, since the launch of monthly event in February, it has supported over 170 small and medium enterprises, contributing over R800,000 in trade value to the local economy.
Fun Creative Workshops
This month on 31 August, Kuier@TheCastle will feature several fun creative workshops, offering an immersive craft and arts experience. Whether you’re interested in learning a new skill or just looking to spend quality time with family, the workshops are designed to offer something for everyone.The August workshops that can be booked for include:
- Discover the trending art of crochet;
- A micro-mosaic jewellery workshop;
- Make your own painted tote bag workshop;
- A tatting & beadwork workshop to craft your own gorgeous earrings;
- A self-portrait drawing workshop;
- A creative candle workshop, and
- A workshop which explores tufting where you can create your own personalised item.
And for ceramics lovers, renowned South African ceramist John Bauer also hosts an insightful talk and tour of the Iziko Ceramic Museum in the afternoon.

Throughout the day there will also be special workshops running for kids to explore their creativity and make their own crafted pieces to take home.
Pop-Up Boutiques and Fashion Shows – Celebrate creative women
Adding to the celebration of Women’s Month with style, local designer Thabo Makhetha will host two fashion shows at 12pm and 1:30pm, showcasing the latest trends at her LuxLane pop-up boutique. Plus, the lively Best Thing Ever pop-up market returns with local creatives from across Cape Town.

All visitors will enjoy access to all the Castle’s museums and exhibitions throughout the day.
“An additional attraction this Women’s month is an exquisite exhibition by local artist Chantal Coetzee. Dubbed African Queens: Rewriting history, this visual art exhibition, on display inside the Castle’s Good Hope Gallery, celebrates and honours the life and times of African warrior queens who gallantly fought armed colonial conquest on the continent. This must-see collection runs from 9 August to 30 September 2024 and Kuier@TheCastle guests will be able to meet the artist in person,” says Calvyn Gilfellan, CEO of the Castle Control Board.
