Well know ceramicist, Clementina van der Walt explains why she is not sticking to ceramics only. With years of loadshedding she had difficulties with kiln firing, and decided to look at other products and then focused on fabrics. She took inspiration from the designs on her ceramics and specifically her wall tiles. She took one design and repeated that pattern, that could then be digitally printed on fabric. She developed a range of textiles used in a range she calls the Capensis Collection – “capensis” meaning from the Cape.
In November 2023 she introduced some of the fabrics in an exhibition titled Earth and Thread. She enjoyed putting textiles and ceramics together and creating that conversation. She likes making ceramics for daily use and enjoyed developing place mats, runners, table cloths and towels which similarly are everyday items. But she also uses the fabrics for bags, luxury shoppers, zip bags and so on.
Interwoven – Cape Threads & African Roots opens 16 August 13:00 – 16:00
Clementina is producing these products together with Design Afrika, run by Binky Newman. They will be working together to present an exhibition of textiles and ceramics, titled Interwoven – Cape Threads & African Roots, which opens on Saturday 16 August at 13:00. On view will be Clementina’s Capensis Collection and ceramic ware, together with Binky’s collection sourced from all over Africa. And homemade soup will be served in bowls by Clementina. This takes place at the All Saints Church Hall in Roodebloem Road, Woodstock.
The exhibition reflects the revival of interest in the object, as opposed to industrial imports, particularly from China. Here you will find something that adds value, as it’s made by hand. It has that personal touch, the energy and the human soul that has gone into it.
Get to the exhibition to see that ceramics and fabrics have a human soul that can add to your daily life!
