Fine Music Radio (FMR) – Africa’s only Classical and Jazz radio station – has been awarded Best Radio Station Promoting Jazz at the 9th Mzantsi Jazz Awards. The winner was decided by public vote, which is testament to FMR’s reach and influence.
This prestigious recognition highlights FMR’s ongoing commitment to celebrating and sharing jazz, especially the station’s dedication to promoting South African jazz and giving a platform to local talent.
The 9th Mzantsi Jazz Awards took place at the Keorapetse William Kgositsile Theatre, University of Johannesburg, on 30 August, with a celebration of soul, rhythm and legacy. The evening was hosted by MoAfrika’a Mokgathi and was a fitting tribute to the enduring power of jazz.
Attending the event on behalf of FMR were jazz presenters Saan Mahomed and Penelope. In his acceptance speech, on behalf of the station, Saan paid tribute to the station’s first manager, the late Rashid Lombard.
FMR’s station manager Eon de Vos said, “Fine Music Radio’s original licence application thirty years ago was successful largely because of the inclusion of jazz in its format, and we must pay homage to the late Rashid Lombard who had the vison and foresight to serve both the classical music and jazz-loving community of Cape Town. This award proves that our loyal listeners are truly proud of FMR.”
The Mzantsi Jazz Awards exist to recognise the unique role of jazz in the evolving South African music industry, ensuring that this genre continues to receive the attention and appreciation it deserves.
