This is the Easter Weekend, but also Passover and Ramadan – so, hopefully you will have time out to enjoy the many galleries and museums that you will discover on the 2023 Art Craft + Museums Map. Here a selection on this Easter Weekend Round Up.

And an added feature is that all these stops have excellent restaurants on site or very close by!

First stop is the V&A Waterfront, with the Zeitz MOCAA offering two special exhibitions. When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting is an in-depth showcase of the work of black artists from Africa and the diaspora. “Over the last decade, figurative painting by Black artists has risen to a new prominence in contemporary art,” says Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator at Zeitz MOCAA. See an interview with her on the Sanlam Arts Round Up HERE. The other exhibition is a solo exhibition by Mary Evans titled GILT, which she explains reflects on the  “umbilical connection” to her African roots. See her interview HERE.

We now head south to the Norval Foundation for the Berni Searle retrospective titled Having But Little Gold.  the exhibition brings together many of Searle’s key works, as well as a new commission in the atrium. Special mention is made of the stunning work which references the devastating fire at the University of Cape Town Library. And a visit is not complete without a leisurely walk through  the Norval Sculpture Garden.

Then on to Kalk Bay Modern, which currently has its annual Art on Paper exhibition. Gallery owner, Cheryl Rumback, talks us through Art on Paper XIV on a Sanlam Arts Round Up. Don’t forget to take in the view over False Bay.

We now head for the Winelands and the Boschendal Norval Gallery is an obvious choice. In the historic Manor House we can salivate over the work of Geena Wilkinson in her exhibition titled Hunger, Geena  tell us about her exhibition HERE. And no need to go hungry with the food options available on the Boschendal Wine Estate!

Now off to Franschhoek, where we head for Ebony/Curated at there 2 locations in the village, also known as the food capital of South Africa. The Bordeaux House location always has a splendid selection of works in this spacious setting. The Franschhoek Square branch has the Ardmore Studio as an add on to the gallery area. And then right opposite the Huguenot Museum is the outdoor Art@Africa Sculpture Garden.

Last stop is The New Junk Shop in Stanford, which is always worth visiting if you are looking for interesting antiques and memorabilia. Owner, Erwin Esterhuizen, will no doubt be able to fill you in on all that’s on offer.

This Easter Weekend Round Up will head you in the right direction. And all the information you need is on the 2023 Art Craft + Museums Map
