Franschhoek Library Fund benefits from the Literary Fest

Do you know that each seat you buy at the Franschhoek Literary Festival makes a contribution to the great cause of creating confident readers? You are contributing to the FLF LIBRARY FUND.

One of the main reasons for starting the FLF in 2007 was to encourage a culture of reading in the Franschhoek valley.

FLF LIBRARY FUND

The FLF Library Fund has donated several thousand age- and language-appropriate new books to schools, creches, a container children’s library in Groendal and the village library. The Fund has employed a qualified librarian in October 2012 who has upgraded and helps to run three primary school libraries, with a fourth soon to be established.  It helps to cover the cost of part-time library assistants and continues to donate new books to these and other school and local libraries

Weekly visits to the upgraded school libraries by all classes for storytelling and to borrow books, as well as the excitement of author visits during the Book Week for Young Readers, are already improving local reading levels.

BOOK WEEK FOR YOUNG READERS

For the past two years, every class in the Franschhoek valley – around 4 500 learners – has been visited during the lead-up to the main Festival by one of 50 children’s and young adult authors and workshop facilitators who have read from their books, told stories, run workshops, and generally created a happy buzz about reading and writing. The visiting authors enjoy the experience too!

OPEN MORNING FOR OUTSIDE SCHOOLS

This takes place on Friday morning as the Festival begins, and consists of four special events for visiting high schools, covering topics like science and technology, school issues, role models, and young adult reading – all associated with current books. Tickets are R20 (free for disadvantaged schools).

Nelson Mandela
“It is my wish that the voice of the storyteller will never die in Africa, that all children in the world may experience the wonder of books, and that they will never lose the capacity to enlarge their earthly dwelling place with the magic of stories.”
