First Thursdays has assembled an exhibition at the AVA Gallery titled Together: An exhibition celebrating 10 years of First Thursdays and Gareth Pearson takes us through the background to First Thursdays and the exhibition itself.
First Thursdays started as a simple idea to activate Cape Town’s city centre after hours. The first edition took place in September 2012, with six art spaces (the AVA being one of them) keeping their doors open late, and a small crowd of curious Capetonians setting out to explore the programme on foot. Gareth tells us how it has grown and has reached out so positively to open up the city and make art more accessible. First Thursdays are looked forward to as an energetic mix of culture and fun. It has certainly brought in a younger audience who enjoy the street party vibe and feel welcomed into the galleries.
“Together: celebrating 10 years of First Thursdays” came about through an open call that brought in 600 submissions. The exhibition is made up of 80 selected works, which has received a really great response.
Here’s wishing First Thursdays many more years of bringing us all together to enjoy Cape Town and its vibrant gallery scene!
