Exploring the human condition through expressive painterly means

Hannes van Zyl exhibition titled “Looking Back, Looking Forward: A Selection of Figure Studies from 1995 to 2024” opens at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery + Clay Museum on Saturday 21 September 2024 at 11h00.

The paintings on exhibition are based on real as well as imaginary subjects, exploring the human condition through expressive painterly means. Most of the artworks lean towards the ’emotional dark side’, but may incorporate irony and touches of humour as can be observed in the way titles are chosen after completion.

In his process Hannes relies on sound and proficient painting techniques underpinned by a broad art historical understanding. For him, this is important in order to develop a personal artistic freedom that has the potential of rendering a unique and meaningful creative endeavour.

Opening Speaker: Prof. Elizabeth Gunter. Elizabeth Gunter studied at Stellenbosch University, where she graduated with a BA degree in Fine Arts (Educationis). She obtained Honours (1980) and Masters (1984) degrees in Fine Arts and a PhD degree in Visual Arts (2011) from the same university. She has lectured art at various institutions, currently at the Visual Arts Department, Stellenbosch University. She has had several solo exhibitions in the Western Cape, participated in numerous group exhibitions and her work is represented in private, corporate, and public collections both in South Africa and abroad.

An excellent reason to head for the Rust-en-Vrede Gallery + Clay Museum. ENJOY!
