Revel in South Africa’s diverse and eclectic cultural heritage with a full and varied, free line-up of some of the country’s most talented entertainers this Heritage Day at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre.
Being screened in South Africa for the first time ever, Desmond Tutu’s documentary Children of Light will start the day’s celebrations at 11H30am, followed by a performance by the Hlanganani Marimba Band at 13h00. Children of Light follows the social activist, retired archbishop’s life story, giving insight into a man many see as the moral compass of South Africa.
Langa’s Hlanganani Marimba Band, formed as a group of traditional dancers performing gumboot dancing and other traditional African dance in 2005, will light up the stage at the V&A Amphitheatre with their mesmerising performance and extraordinary musical dance talents.
V&A visitors will be treated to a preview of the Cape Town Fringe Festival from 1pm at the Amphitheatre, featuring some of the attractions that are sure to be highlights when the festival kicks off the following day.
The line-up at the Waterfront’s preview show includes Corne and Twakkie (who need almost no introduction), critically-acclaimed guitarist/singer Gary Thomas, orchestral players the Phax Trio, and the Brothers Streep, an acoustic comedy act from Cape Town. The Phax Trio comprises three former South African National Youth Orchestra principal players, whose music has been described as “sultry and hair-raising Contra-Balkan, Hosh-Klezmer and Parisian peep show inspired”.
Musical performances by the Talisa Symons, quartet, and the internationally experienced Afro-Jazz Mpho & Uvimba group (4pm and 5pm respectively) will follow the Fringe Festival preview, and the day will end with a repeat screening of Children of Light at 6pm.
