International Mandela Day 18 July – and Lindie Buirski of the Nelson Mandela in Cape Town Legacy Exhibition tells us about a new exhibition and exciting future developments, on the Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio.
Listen to the Art Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30
As International Mandela Day is on the date of his birth, we exchanged birthday wishes and Lindie points out that these wishes extend to people all round the world as this is an international celebration of the important contribution this great man made nationally and internationally.
Lindie explains that the Nelson Mandela in Cape Town Legacy Exhibition, based at the Cape Town City Hall, tells his story in a very positive light. How do we learn from the past and make it better in the future. And you need to take on the role of the responsible person to make the difference and to be the next Nelson Mandela.
This is an important message to get across to the learners from schools, who are bussed in to visit the Legacy Exhibition.
The Grand Parade Exhibition is new. The importance of the Grand Parade has a particular significance as the place where Nelson Mandela made his first appearance as a free man and spoke from the balcony of the Cape Town City Hall.
The Grand Parade is also part of our history. It is the historical centre of Cape Town, facing the Castle of Good Hope and with the Bishop Tutu Truth to Power up the road in an historic building. It is also the site of the original fort, with only the foundations still visible. Plaques on the ground indicate where the original building stood. Look out for these markers below.
Looking into the future, there are plans to bring back the Old Fort using Augmented Reality – allowing the building to pop up! There are also plans to introduce self guided tours. Currently you can book a tour that will take you around the exhibitions and also take you to discover the whole precinct and its history. And as the focus is on Nelson Mandela in Cape Town you will also visit District Six and be told about the many people that Nelson Mandela dealt with from the city.
Whenever YOU visit the Nelson Mandela in Cape Town – Legacy Exhibition, its a special Mandela Day experience!
