Emphasizing individuality, the section encourages exploration of past-present-future dynamics in contemporary art. Notably, the exhibition features renowned artist Dr. Esther Mahlangu, whose retrospective will coincide with the fair’s opening at Iziko National Gallery on February 18, 2024. Booking is closed, walk-ins are on a first-come first-serve basis.

14h00 – 15h00: In the Booth: Untitled hosts an Artist Talk with Ulriche Jantjes
This body of work consists of a range of media, which is attributable to Ulriche’s method of gathering visual and material information. The booth is an installation-based representation of the community and landscape in Elim. It alludes to visual cues, motifs and metaphors specific to the environment and daily life, for example fynbos, gravel roads, agricultural fields, bodies of water, historic buildings, children in go-karts. Natural features are in conversation with figurative aspects reflecting the people active in the environment, piecing together events and observations to create a personal record of the Ulriche’s memories and experiences in Elim. Booking is closed, walk-ins are on a first-come first-serve basis.

16h00 – 18h00: 16 on Lerotholi hosts an Exhibition Opening and afternoon of Jazz
“Locating Identity” is an exploration, a nuanced journey into the heart of Langa, where African artistry emerges as a profound expression of identity and cultural wealth. For far too long, the narrative has compelled us to seek recognition in distant, affluent realms. Now, the narrative shifts, and we invite you to an intellectual soirée where the very essence of African creativity is unveiled within the intimate confines of Lerotholi Ave. Booking is closed, walk-ins are on a first-come first-serve basis.

17H00-18H30: Talk: Curator Filippo Maggia in Conversation with Artists Tommaso Fiscaletti and Nic Grobler
The Appearance is supported by the Italian Consulate in South Africa and Consulate of Italy in Cape Town and the Italian Institute of Culture Pretoria.

17H00 – 18H00: Max Melvill | Eyes Wide Shut
Five art fair interventions exploring the role & agency of the audience in the art world. Unbound City continues today with Thania Petersen’s performance in Bo Kaap. With the success of our two pop-up exhibitions by Galerie EIGEN + ART and Suburbia Contemporary last weekend, this event is not one to miss. Booking is closed, walk-ins are on a first-come first-serve basis.

18h30 – 20h00: Unbound City | Bo Kaap Museum Hosts a Performance by Thania Petersen
