Irma Stern. A Modern Artist between Berlin and Cape Town

On the Arts Round Up, Nobukho Nqaba (Curator and Education Coordinator) and Kathy Wheeler (Irma Stern Trust Curator) tell us about Irma Stern works we can currently see at the Irma Stern Museum in Cape Town and the Brücke-Museum in Berlin.

Kathy Wheeler gives us the background to the exhibition Irma Stern. A Modern Artist between Berlin and Cape Town at the Brücke-Museum in Berlin. This was an initiative of  the Brücke-Museum as there had been no Irma Stern exhibition in Berlin, fpr over 80 years, despite her studying there so many years ago. Lisa Hörstmann, who did her PhD on Irma Stern, had visited the Museum in Cape Town and worked as Co-Curator with Kathy in putting this exhibition together. The more than 40 works are not only from the Irma Stern Trust Collection, but also works borrowed from the Rupert Collection, Iziko and private collections. This covers not only her oils, but also works on paper and the Congo Journal.

Irma Stern, Zanzibar boy,

The response to this selection of the artist’s work in Irma Stern. A Modern Artist between Berlin and Cape Town has been excellent. The tremendous interest this exhibition has generated has also been felt back in Cape Town.

Nobukho Nqaba explains that at the Irma Stern Museum, some of the favourite works are in Berlin, which gave them an opportunity to freshen up with new oil paintings from the collection, which you can see in the lounge and downstairs areas. Upstairs there are now goauche works – one area focusing on people in labouring positions, the other of dancers. These works have not been seen for a long time.

Irma Stern,

The other project that Nobukho has been working on is a collaboration with the Western Cape Department of Education with Grade 11 learners in the province. Lots of school groups have visited the Museum to engage with the work and also to do practical workshops. On 6 September the Irma Stern Museum will be celebrating this project with the opening of an exhibition of the work produced.

NEWS FLASH – the Irma Stern book that Nobukho Nqaba is holding in the photo above, Irma Stern Nudes, 1916–1965, by Michael Godby, will be launched on Saturday 23 August at 11:00 at the Museum.  Author Michael Godby will be in conversation with Sean O’Toole to mark the release of this new publication in Cape Town.
