Jolly July at Zeitz MOCAA continues and here are two events to add to your diary – a Zoom event with Tracey Rose and a workshop based on the work of Mary Evans
- Tracy Rose Online Conversation
In 2022, Zeitz MOCAA presented the largest comprehensive exhibition of South African artist Tracy Rose’s work. Titled Shooting Down Babylon, the exhibition traced the artist’s trajectory from her earlier interests in interrogating and exploring narrow identity tropes to the aesthetics of violence. Shooting Down Babylon is now on show at Queens Museum in New York and on Wednesday, 19 July at 1 pm EST / 7 pm (UTC+2), the artist will be participating in an online conversation titled Lassoooing with the Postcolonial Cowboys: A Conversation between Tracey Rose and Kendell Geers. The discussion will be moderated by art historian, curator and writer Thembinkosi Goniwe and will explore the seismic shifts in Rose’s practice to major art and political movements from the 1990s to the present day as well as how these practices impact performance and art-making across South Africa and the world..

Inspired by South Africa’s annual celebration of Mandela Day, which takes place on 18 July, the Centre for Art Education (CFAE) has created a Family Learning Workshop around the theme of Commemorating Legends and Heroes that will take place on Saturday, 29 July. Taking a cue from a body of work titled the Recollection Plates series which features in GILT, the solo exhibition by the Nigeria-born, British-based artist, Mary Evans, installed on level 1 of the museum, participants will be asked to create a commemorative plate of someone whose memory they wish to honour.
Zeitz MOCAA’s Family Learning Workshops at the CFAE offer parents/guardians and their child(ren) a space to share a creative experience and develop their engagement with art, together. Materials and equipment are provided along with a snack break. This workshop is limited to 25 participants, including parents/guardians, and begins at 10.15 am. The workshop is free for children and members. Members must please register, while a single entry for non-members to accompany their child is R230. Zeitz MOCAA memberships are R390 for 12 months and provide year-round access and free entry to specified CFAE programmes.’
