Long March to Freedom

Sarah Haines

Mandela Day on 18 July and Sarah Haines tells us what we can look forward to at the Long March to Freedom on this annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela.

Sarah’ has been with  the Long March to Freedom since inception when approached by Dali Tambo. She quips that it could be called the LARGE March to Freedom as the procession numbers 100 life-sized bronzes of iconic individuals covering a period of 350 years.

On 18 July, there will be a new 67-minute guided tour that focuses on Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom, touching on his life and people he had known. The guided tour, every hour on the hour will be FREE that day and runs from 10am to 3pm. A good reason to be there on Mandela Day!

The setting is ‘one of  the best in the country’ with the procession led by Winnie and Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Tutu behind them, with Table Mountain as a backdrop.

The concept for this monumental procession was originated by Dali Tambo, son of Adelaide and Oliver Tambo. He told Sarah, that post 1994, after the elections, he visited his father’s grave and asked his dad what he could do to honour him – ‘can I build a statue of you?’ Later his father answered him and advised ‘not for me but for all them’. Thirteen years ago Dali brought a sketch to Sarah and said ‘let’s do this’. So Sarah has been involved since inception.

There are 98 people plus a dog, horses and a bull in bronze in this impressive monument.

Long March to Freedom is open 365 days a year, But they do try and limit visits on Mondays as they have a sponsored school project programme that day.

The Guided Tour will be FREE on 18 July – Mandela Day, although there will be a R20:00 entry fee.

All very good reasons to celebrate International Mandela Day with a 67-minute guided tour of the extraordinary Long March to Freedom.
