There are just under 25 000 schools in South Africa. Of those, 3 544 do not have electricity, 401 have no water supply.

The reasoning behind Equal Education’s two-year battle to get Angie Motshekga, the education minister, to publish norms and standards for school infrastructure is best explained through statistics. There are just under 25 000 schools in South Africa. Of those, 3 544 do not have electricity, 401 have no water supply, 913 do not have ablution facilities, 22 938 do not have stocked libraries, 19 541 do not even have a space for a library, and 19 037 do not have a computer centre. If these statistics make you angry, do something about it by joining the Equal Education Cape Town Youth Day March and demanding that Motshekga fix our schools now.
