The “March of the Penguin” campaign is how the Two Oceans Aquarium is celebrating penguins during the month of March .
During this time, the Aquarium is offering enticing activities and information about penguins; a great membership competition with penguin-themed prizes; QR code-led tours through the Aquarium, “After 3 Special” discounted entrance fees and a whole lot more.
Spotlight on Penguins
Penguins are charismatic birds that play a vital role in the marine ecosystem. As indicator species, the health of the penguin population is an indication of the overall health of the ecosystem. Climate change, overfishing, pollution and other human activities are pushing these birds to the brink of extinction. During March, the Aquarium puts the spotlight on penguins, their importance in the environment and what individuals can do to save these animals.
Throughout the “March of the Penguin” campaign, the Aquarium will share intriguing facts and information about penguins from around the world, like
- “What do penguins eat?”,
- “How long do they live?”,
- “How to speak like a penguin”,
- and other fascinating facts.
The Aquarium’s social media channels will be abuzz with videos, Instagram stories, Facebook updates, and at the same time, the Aquarium website will be humming (or should that be braying?) with penguin blogs, some extra special visuals, and arts and crafts. A very exciting addition is a live webcam streaming activity on the Aquarium’s penguin beach. The stream can be found as part of the extensive blog collection on the Aquarium’s website (https://www.aquarium.co.za/blog/entry/african-penguin-livestream ).
Onsite, Aquarium visitors are able to follow a QR code-led tour, by using their cell phones to scan QR codes that have been strategically placed at various exhibits. These codes open up a wonderful world of penguin information, bringing facts, visuals and fun activities into the palms of visitors. The Aquarium’s penguin mascot, Samantha, will also make surprise appearances during the month.
Penguin Experiences
Penguin Experiences are also back on offer at the Aquarium, although the birds are currently undergoing their annual moult and are not available to meet with visitors. These amazing Experiences afford the opportunity to meet the rockhopper penguins face-to-face, and are incredibly popular. While the birds are making the most of changing their feathers, the Aquarium has implemented a waiting list for those who would like to book a Penguin Experience. To reserve a space on this list, please email experience@aquarium.co.za. Details about Penguin Experiences at the Two Oceans Aquarium can be found here.
Along with “March of the Penguin”, the Aquarium is also running an incredible membership competition. Everyone who joins the Aquarium’s membership programme in March will automatically be entered into a competition to win a prize valued at R10 000 (including a Penguin Experience, entrance tickets to other activities and attractions, vouchers and gift cards)! Entering the competition is as easy as joining as a new member of the Aquarium, or purchasing a gift membership during March. Have a look at the Aquarium’s website to join online and to see all the information and Ts & Cs for the competition. Joining as a member is also available when visiting the Aquarium, by stopping in at the Visitor Centre at the entrance of the Aquarium. Members of the Aquarium can visit the fish and penguins as often as they wish during the year of their membership.
Another benefit of an Aquarium membership is members-only events. On 13 March one such special event will focus specifically on penguins and the Aquarium’s penguin keepers will share stories and answer questions about the very special birds that they look after. This event is only open to members of the Aquarium, and booking is essential (members@aquarium.co.za ). Numbers are limited according to Government Covid-19 protocols.
The Aquarium’s “After 3 Special” is on offer until 31 March with discounted entrance tickets available for purchase after 15h00 at the Aquarium’s Ticket Office. This is perfect for those visitors who feel like going on an underwater adventure and would like to visit later in the day, once the household chores and shopping are done, and home-schooling has wrapped. These discounted tickets can only be purchased at the Aquarium’s Ticket Office, and are only valid for the day on which they were purchased. The Bootlegger Coffee Company Aquarium and Aquarium Gift Shop are also running special offers during this time. The Aquarium and the City Sightseeing boats are currently offering special combo tickets which combines an Aquarium visit and a canal or harbour cruise. All information is available here.
March is certainly going to be a thrilling time at the Two Oceans Aquarium. With penguins galore, a mind-blowing competition, and extra special discount offers, fun, entertainment and education are sure to happen. Get your waddle on this March and join the “March of the Penguin” at the Two Oceans Aquarium!
