Cape Town will be promoting open access to government and enhancing their work of building an inclusive city by providing a platform for young emerging artists from across Cape Town.
The City will showcase artwork by emerging artists from across the city, feature live music performances, and provide patrons with information about a range of City’s services.
“This initiative is line with our commitments in the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan to be a more responsive, proactive and customer-centric administration and leverage partnerships for progress.”
First Thursdays
First Thursdays is a forward-looking concept that draws tourists and Capetonians to the city centre around art, food and live music.
Each month, the event turns the city centre into a vibrant hub of activity with different people, cultures and art streams coming together to celebrate creativity.
The City will add its own innovative take on First Thursdays, supporting Cape Town’s many gifted emerging artists. The City’s space will host young, upcoming visual and performing artists.
For the majority of visual artists from previously disadvantaged areas, finding space to display their work proves to be difficult and they often struggle to establish networking and business opportunities. The City is creating this space to help upcoming artists take their careers in art to the next level and to enhance our efforts in building an inclusive city where we celebrate and nurture talents from across the city.
Emerging artists at First Thursdays
Emerging artists from across the city will be the first to exhibit at the Mayor’s First Thursdays on 5 October 2017.
The night will also feature live performances by established artists Jimmy Nevis and Chad Saaiman, who will open the stage for some of Cape Town’s upcoming performers including Kerwin, G&T and others.
Patrons will have the opportunity to access a host of City information and engage with the Mayor, Mayoral Committee Members and City officials.
“We call on all regular First Thursdays patrons and newcomers to visit the space and support our young talents and their craft. Let us work together to make a great city even greater and proudly support local art.”
