Richard Mudariki, founder of artHARARE, a pre-eminent platform to experience contemporary art from Zimbabwe and Alastair Whitton, Barnard’s Art Director, co-curated Tributaries – Contemporary Zimbabwean Narratives at the Barnard Gallery.

Richard Mudariki tells us of his background, when he studied at the Delta Gallery in Harare, which he refers to as his art school. In 2008 he came to South Africa and became part of the Cape Town art scene.
When COVID struck, he felt the need to help fellow Zimbabwe artists and established artHarare, to create a platform to achieve this objective.
The fellow artists in Tributaries – Contemporary Zimbabwean Narratives are based locally and in Harare. He is also hoping to raise the awareness of these artists back in Zimbabwe. The title “Tributaries” is intended to bring artists into the main stream of the artworld. This also reflects on the international interest in contemporary art from Africa.
The image on the front cover of the 2023 Art Craft + Museums Map is ‘The Model’, a triptych by Richard Mudariki, which is also currently on view at the Sanlam Art Gallery in the exhibition Re Mmgogo – We Are Together.
