Reminisce is a group exhibition at The Cape Gallery in which the participating artists explore aspects of the past through ‘Vico’s lens’.
Reflecting upon the past through the eyes of the present, the participating artists, be they humanists, classicist, or neither of these are on a quest to discover ‘Who we are, where we come from and where we are going’.
Giambattista Vico 1668-1744 was an Italian philosopher, rhetorician, historian, and jurist during the Italian Enlightenment. He outlined his conception of society as a developing organism in his opus Scienza Nuova. Based on the principles and methods of Aristotle, who advocated a method that studies art in relation to its origins, history, and distribution Vico conceived art to be pre-logical mode of expression, as something necessary and inevitable and organic, as much the language of the Heroic Age of Homer as the expression of imagination and heroism in the life of an artist in any age.
