Robyn is delighted that the Rupert Museum is open again, and receiving so many of their old visitors back and hopefully reaching some new ones as well. It’s a perfect time to be visiting museums with the weather chilly – there’s so much to see and do in the Museum space. She points out that although reopened, they still have some maintenance to do, so currently it is only the 2 large galleries that are open, including the cafe. And they are growing even more, so that by year end there will be even more to see and do at the museum
The current exhibitions are based on the theme of horizons a theme they are taking though the whole space, for at least about a year. “Horison” (Eng – Horizon) is the title of the exhibition in Gallery 1. They want to interrogate this horizons theme, looking at their own collection and later on bring in some contemporary artworks to engage with the permanent collection. But to kick off with, it will be works from the permanent collection in Gallery 1.
The idea is to look at where land meets sky, which is a beautiful concept. There are works by international artists, works from 100 years ago, local artists, 2oth century and more contemporary works.
In Gallery 2, the concept of horizons continues with the works of JH Pierneef on loan to the Museum from Transnet. These large landscapes were a commission for the Johannesburg Railway Station and produced between 1929 and 1932, when Pierneeef was already a well known artist. These large scale landscapes were high in the niches at the railway station. The works were to show off the beautiful places you could visit – giving the feeling of travel. Large and impressive works to engage with.
And next week is Museum Saturdays on 28 June! The first one since reopening was in May, a warming up for June. It’s all about community and for everyone from 8 years old to 80. Museum Saturdays are about live performances, wine-tasting ,a special menu at the Cafe and entertainment. There are also workshops – so you will see stations in the galleries with people engaging with the art. [Please note booking is required for the Workshops here]
