‘Out of the Icebox’: A rare retrospective (Ground Level)
In celebration of 60 years collecting and curating, the newly unveiled exhibition, ‘Out of the Icebox’, showcases 90 artworks dating as far back as the 1800s. These works, many unseen for years, have been carefully selected from the Sanlam Art Collection’s extensive archives. Some have adorned office spaces, while many remained in storage, waiting to be showcased.
Now, brought back into the public eye for Sanlammers and visitors alike, they offer a unique glimpse into the Collection’s evolution, the curatorial choices that shaped it, and the wider narrative of art across time. You can view this, one of the most important corporate collections in the country, at Bellville Head Office.
‘Manifesto’ (Mezzanine Level)
A visual chronicle of South Africa’s sociopolitical past
The current exhibition drawing to a close soon, titled ‘Manifesto’, offers a compelling exploration of South Africa’s complex sociopolitical history. Curated by Stefan Hundt, Curator of the Sanlam Art Collection, Manifesto delves into the emotional and political landscapes of our past, exploring themes of protest, human rights, and the enduring quest for justice. The selected works – at times poignant, and at times, challenging – reflects how the arts have historically engaged with social realities, using visual expression as a form of resistance and a call for change. Having run over important observation dates such as Human Rights Day (21 March), Freedom Day (28 April), and concluding with Youth Day (16 June), the exhibition invites viewers to reflect not only on the turbulent past but also on the state of our democracy today.
It’s not an easy viewing, nor should it be. Rather, it is an experience designed to provoke thought, invite dialogue, and inspire a deeper understanding of the nation’s ongoing transformation, while being moved by the superb craftmanship and vision of the featured artists.
