The first museum solo exhibition by artist Senzeni Marasela – Waiting for Gebath – opens today at Zeitz MOCAA. The exhibition centres around Marasela’s fictional alter ego, Theodorah, whom the artist based on her mother.
Discover this artist’s intricate practice that sees her explore the experiences of black working women in South Africa, subjected to the devastating effects of migration, patriarchy, and apartheid
Get to know the artist
Born in 1977 in Thokoza, South Africa, Senzeni Marasela’s art deals with history, memory, and personal narrative, and aims to give voice to overlooked female figures.
She works in photography, video, prints, and mixed-medium installations involving textiles and embroidery.
The bulk of Marasela’s 22-year career is marked by her performance as her character, Theodorah. The character became so entangled with the artist’s own life, that Marasela wore exclusively for six years the same red dress.
