Rich Mnisi and Justine Mahoney will be opening solo exhibitions titled VIGIL and Dzuvula (Shedding Skin) respectively at Southern Guild on 8 February at 6pm.
VIGIL, a solo exhibition of ceramic sculpture and large scale paintings by South African artist Justine Mahoney, reimagines the 12 Jungian archetypes in a series of sculpted ceramic figures and large-scale enamel-on-fabric paintings. Encountering what German philosopher Carl Jung refers to as “Mythopoeic Imagination” – the dark and fertile landscape of active imagination – Mahoney conjures vivid manifestations of each archetypal model. Rooted in a wealth of esoteric theory, VIGIL embodies and mythologises facets of the collective human unconscious.
Dzuvula (Shedding Skin), a solo exhibition of collectible design by Rich Mnisi, is an expansion on a cosmology of duality that began to emerge with the designer’s debut collection, Nyoka (2021), the new body of work complicates the interplay of the mundane and the magical, the bound and the free. Comprising furniture, lighting and a rug, the collection is in sleek continuum: lines elongate and bend into curves, hard angles are plied into malleable shapes.
