Southern Guild presents Idladla, a solo exhibition by ceramic artist Andile Dyalvane.
Andile Dyalvane is one of South Africa’s foremost ceramic artists. His new show, Idlala, follows a premier in New York with the solo Camagu at the Friedman Benda gallery. Dyalvane will open at Southern Guild Silo to coincide with the highly anticipated opening of Zeitz MOCAA – Africa’s first contemporary art museum.
Idladla is a study and exploration of scope, scale and texture.
Gently rounded terracota forms, marked with precise incisions, hand imprints and motifs, follow a strong architectural impulse. This is inspired by the parallels Dyalvane noticed in structures as distant from each other as upstate New York and Mali. An evolution of the angular vessels of his previous show, the works capture the artist’s visceral vernacular and continual experimentation. Each piece pivots around Dyalvane’s central values of cultural preservation and gratitude.
Idladla is a ‘reminder of what we’ve lost but also of what can still be saved,’ he says.
‘Andile’s work is most compelling in that it is grounded in its tribute to the earth and simultaneously shaped by a lifelong affinity with clay and the story of time, space and process’, says Trevyn McGowan, co-founder of Southern Guild. ‘This deeply personal connection to the medium is very evocative.’
Andile Dyalvane is the recipient of the 2014 Southern Guild Design Foundation Icon Award. He has earned residencies in various cities around the world as well as the prestigious solo exhibition at Friedman Benda in New York City in 2016.
