Poswa’s second solo with Southern Guild, uBuhle boKhokho (Beauty of Our Ancestors) draws inspiration from the elaborate art of women’s hairstyling on the African continent. The ceramic and bronze sculptures are colossal in their scale and intricacy, marking another ambitious chapter for the artist.
Zizipho Poswa is a Cape Town-based ceramic artist whose large-scale, hand-coiled sculptures are bold declarations of African womanhood. She is inspired by the daily Xhosa rituals she witnessed as a young girl growing up in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa and the life-sustaining roles that Xhosa women play in traditional and contemporary life.

PORKY HEFER Volume 4. Chaos Calamus

Hefer’s forthcoming solo is a deeper and more fluid exploration of nest typologies. Woven entirely in Kooboo cane (his original material of choice) and incorporating timber for the first time, his seating structures reflect on the phenomenon of mutually beneficial symbiosis between species.
Most recently, Hefer’s large-scale installation, Plastocene – Marine Mutants From a Disposable World, made its world premiere at the 2020 NGV Triennial at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. Commissioned by the museum, the collection of large-scale handmade seating environments draws attention to ocean pollution by imagining mutant sea creatures evolved from plastic bags, straws, and coffee cups.
