Stand Up, stars Nik Rabinowitz with Kagiso ‘KG’ Mokgadi as the opening act at the Baxter.

“Hi it’s me, Nik, and I’m here to tell you about my new comedy show. Normally I’d create a formal press release and write glowing things about myself in the third person that sound like they were written by my publicist. Things like; ‘Nik Rabinowitz is back with another great show about funny things!’ But then I thought; that’s boring and impersonal. I want to get to know you better and I want you to get to know me better… so… what are you wearing right now?”

From that announcement you get a sense of this comedian’s engaging presence!

“I’m writing a new show called Stand Up. And it’s about so many things… like the time I went to Canada and heard about a moose eating flowers in a Shoprite. And the time I went to Israel to play cricket to bring about world peace (fail). And the the other time I babysat our kids for three full hours.  There’s a whole lot more, of course, with some of our favourite characters like Oscar and Julius and Jacob and Helen, all part of this poorly lit, insane reality TV series we call South Africa.

My opening act is a man who goes by the initials KG. He was born to a Sangoma dad – aside from that and the fact that he’s been touring the country like crazy with his comedy, we don’t know much else about him.  What I can tell you is that he is exceptionally talented and I’m taking a major risk by putting him on before me, because if he’s as good as I think he is, I’m basically screwed. It’ll also make things awkward between us while the show is running, which is too bad because I really like him as a person.”
