A Hot Topic, Worldwide, is the Introduction of Laboratory Grown Diamonds

Stefan Doveton takes us into historic Huguenot House the home of the Museum of Gems and Jewellery, that focuses on the natural resources found in South and Southern Africa, and tells us about new developments in the world of diamonds.

Prins & Prins are private manufacturing jewellers focusing on everything natural. The Museum was developed to provide an insight into the natural resources of gold, diamond and platinum deposits and how jewellery evolved over centuries. The museum looks at the process from taking these minerals and working them into beautiful pieces of wearable art.

A hot topic, worldwide, is the introduction of laboratory grown diamonds and how they compare to natural diamonds. Research  has gone into how diamonds were formed, recreating those environments in a lab and literally growing diamonds. Technically these are diamonds with the same physical and chemical properties as their natural counterparts.

museum of gems and jewellery,

The problem is one of value and control, as the lab diamond, produced en masse in countries such as India and China, does not have the value of natural diamonds. Natural diamonds started forming approximately 3 billion years ago. Through major volcanic activity they came to the surface and today they are mined.

One needs the necessary equipment to identify lab diamonds versus real diamonds. A new development with complex issues that need to be understood and carefully contained

Prins & Prins only work with natural, earth mined diamonds. And the good news is that their award winning goldsmiths are working on a new jewellery collection to be launched in spring.
