Tales from The Woods is a combined unique exhibition of illustrations by David Griessel and Talita Steyn that opens at Art@Africa on Saturday 4 November at 11am.
Art@Africa are excited to announce a new wonderous exhibition by artists David Griessel and Talita Steyn who evoke a mysterious, timeless natural world in which fantastical creatures invite us into their magical world. They all have a story. Their voices are gentle but their messages are strong.
Art Art@Africa, believe that artists are agents of change. Through beautiful art that touches the soul, we convey messages of appreciation of nature and conservation of our natural environment.
David Griessel
David was born and raised in Bloemfontein. He completed his BA in Fine Arts at the University of The Free State in 2012. He has since become a full-time artist and book illustrator. David now lives and works in Cape Town. His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout South Africa as well as in France where he took up an art residency at DRAW International in Caylus.
David’s drawings appear to be of a whimsical fantasy scene but the themes that he aims to portray in his work are of a personal and rather serious nature. His works aim to find a balance between playfulness and solemnity, whimsy and pensiveness.
David’s artist statement:
The collection of surreal drawings, sculptures and animations that I’m exhibiting in this exhibition are open ended narrative artworks that deal with themes of nature, conservation, life, death and the subconscious mind.
Artist quote: “Illustration in itself is not seen by many as forming part of the ‘Fine Arts’ family, but more as a bastard child spawned in a scandalous union between word and image. My pictures are my own restless bastard children.”- David Griessel
Talita Steyn
After growing up in Durban Talita went on to study at the University of Pretoria in 1999 where she studied Fine Arts. She discontinued her studies at the end of her third year and took up random jobs such bar tending and working in a sewing factory.
Currently residing in Wilderness on the Garden Route, she has been self-employed ever since, giving herself more time to create art.
Talita’s artist statement:
The Forest Folk- Sacred Custodians of the Old Ways
May the Forest Folk lead you back to the magic of childhood wonder- may they lead you back to your Self.
Artist quote “I aimed to capture the magical allure I felt as a child whenever I was in nature and how as an adult that experience has deepened, become more profound. I wanted to show you the ethereal and playful yet deeply nourishing and protective qualities of these Nature Spirits. “- Talita Steyn
This series of mystical illustration artworks will be showcased until 9 December 2023. Get there and ENJOY!
