Tehorah is the concert, first preformed at Carnegie Hall by Chanteuse Internationale Adrienne Haan, which will take place on Sunday 26 January at the Old Synagogue at the SA Jewish Museum.
Listen to the Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30
Adrienne gives us the background to the premiere of Tehorah in 2015 at Carnegie Hall, which she was invited to repeat in 2023 and we are now thrilled to have her perform in Cape Town in a very special venue.
Tehorah takes us on a musical journey in German, Yiddish, Hebrew and English, starting in the turbulent times, in the 1920’s Weimar Republic, a period when Jewish culture was thriving especially in Berlin. German cabaret music was a vibrant presence, as were Jewish song writers and composers. Then Adrienne moves into the Nazi era and into the ghettos, with the songs predominantly in Yiddish. She then takes us to Israel in the 1950’s with songs in Hebrew.
She explains that her personal life has been devoted to Holocaust remembrance.
The ambience of the old shul – synagogue – appeals to her, as she enjoys the intimacy of the space. She is delighted to have a Steinway grand piano, thanks to the sponsorship of the German Consulate General, who have also supported this performance of Tehorah. Her talented accompanist on the piano is the young and brilliant Cornel Engelbrecht.
