An Exhibition ‘The Song of Tapestry’ by Jean Lurcat will be presented by the Rupert Museum in collaboration with the African concept store at Merchants on Long from 18-22 February 2025
- This is a special pop-up exhibition during Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2025. This pop-up exhibition has a selection of Jean Lurçat tapestries and ceramics, rooted in their Art Nouveau presence and inspiration.
French artist and designer Jean Lurçat (1892-1966), is known as the father of modern tapestry. He designed his first tapestry by 1915, but his long-lasting partnership with the Tabard workshop in the weaving capital of France, Aubusson, started in 1938. The output of tapestries in general was interrupted by World War II but saw the establishment of the Association des peintres-cartonniers de tapisserie in 1947. Lurçat’s strong design that is simplified, dramatic motifs, symbolistic composition and allegories in a restricted palette were ideal for the two-dimensionality of tapestry, ceramics and luxurious domestic ware.
The artist’s work is well-represented in the collections of the Rupert Art Foundation and Huberte Goote. These collections, managed by the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch, comprise close to 90 works, including tapestries, ceramics and lithographs.
Why Art Nouveau, and why Merchants on Long? Merchants on Long excels in celebrating design that is hand-crafted, ethically made and sourced on the African continent. The offering is sold at 34 Long Street, a historic building dating back 350 years. The building’s terracotta facade dated, 1896, is one of “the best examples of Art Nouveau architecture still left in Cape Town” according to historian Desiree Picton-Seymour.
Interweaving the works of Lurçat with African design, provides a window into the visionary world of the artist while in conversation with contemporary designers – the exhibition shares the celebration of artistry, collaboration, aesthetics, quality and tactility. The African design you will encounter is inspired by nature and driven by sustainability, cultural roots and a sense of community. Expect creations by Okapi, lmane Ayissi, Thebe Magugu, Mono by Enam, Leza and Ardmore.
This project was initiated by Hanneli Rupert-Elias, patron of the Rupert Museum and founder of Okapi and Merchants on Long.
Entrance is free, enjoy a glass of wine while wandering through the visual showcase. ENJOY!
