Reconciliation Day is an appropriate day to speak about Archbishop Desmond Tutu, whose Truth To Power Exhibition at the Old Granary recounts his role and that of the churches in the liberation struggle.
Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30
Charlene Houston of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, is the guest on the Sanlam Arts Round Up, the day before Reconciliation Day. She starts by highlighting why ‘The Arch’ is such a global icon for reconciliation, having been granted the Nobel Peace Prize for the role he played in the anti-Apartheid struggle, Archbishop Desmond Tutu continued to play a significant role in nation building when appointed by President Nelson Mandela to be the head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
He was not alone and the establishment of the Truth to Power Exhibition is designed to show where he was coming from and how he acquired his role. The exhibition’s full name is Truth to Power – Desmond Tutu & The Churches in the struggle against apartheid – and reflects how many people of faith were involved.
The response of school children has been significant. The tours arranged for schools are programmed in terms of the curriculum and provide an understanding with what happened a that time.
Also mentioned is the Nelson Mandela in Cape Town Legacy Exhibition nearby at the Cape Town City Hall and The Long March to Freedom at Century City, where ‘The Arch’ is a prominent presence in the procession.
