Two solo exhibitions at Southern Guild open on 23 November – Manyaku Mashilo: An Order of Being and Oluseye: Black Exodus.
Manyaku Mashilo: An Order of Being
An Order of Being – South African artist Manyaku Mashilo’s first solo exhibition with the gallery – features a new body of expansive figurative paintings. Mashilo’s practice acts as an evolving conduit for synthesising elements of her religious upbringing, ancestral heritage, real and invented myth, science fiction, music and archival photographic images. The exhibition includes an immersive multi-panelled triptych, comprising three vast arched canvases. REQUEST A CATALOGUE
Oluseye: Black Exodus
Spanning sculpture, installation and photography created over the past five years, Black Exodus is Nigerian-Canadian artist Oluseye’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. The body of work weaves together the artist’s rich personal narrative, his trans-Atlantic journeys and artistic evolution into a broader exploration of historical and contemporary Black life. The show will feature an installation of 100 palm-sized, re-animated found objects from Oluseye’s ongoing Eminado Series. REQUEST A CATALOGUE
